IIE MSA, is an educational brand of The Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd, and as one of the only private higher education campuses in the country offering water and climate change related qualifications it is essential that we ensure our educational offerings provide skills and knowledge which is needed by the South African water sector and society as a whole. In order to remain relevant and up to date with the requirements/ needs of the sector, IIE MSA hosted a water security and climate change mini conference in early September. Participants from a number of organisations within Gauteng came together to engage in a dialogue around climate change and water security. Notable Organisations around the table included Rand Water, The Gauteng Observation Network. University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology , University of South Africa and the University of Venda. One of the leading messages from this mini conference was that climate change is not a new phenomenon and it should no longer surprise us, we therefore need to plan for it into the future. The world will be waiting to see what comes out of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference which is being held on the African continent for the first time, what resolutions and commitments will be made towards climate change and how will countries grapple with and implement these commitments? The water research centre at IIE MSA also eagerly awaits some of these outcomes to inform our delivery of two unique interdisciplinary water qualifications.
The IIE Postgraduate Diploma in Water Management and IIE Master of Philosophy in Integrated Water Management are targeted at professionals and graduates who wish to strengthen and deepen their interdisciplinary skills and knowledge in water management. The programmes specifically target professionals who are already working in lower to middle-level management positions as well as motivated graduates who want to begin careers that involve exercising both technical and managerial responsibilities in the water sector. Throughout the programme, participants are nurtured to become effective water leaders equipped to understand complex societal challenges and to develop practical solutions for water, sanitation and climate related problems. A unique feature of the programmes is a special focus on knowledge integration and application through the use of problem-based learning activities.
Our teaching and learning endeavours are supported by a diverse water research agenda and industry engagement. We foster excellence in water research and undertake industry engagement activities to strengthen high-impact research ventures. Our aim is to develop the technical and managerial capacity of the local and regional water sector by producing highly sought after IIE water professional graduates, capable of exercising this.
