It is with a great deal of gratitude to the Department of Water & Sanitation that we announce the promulgation of what we all knew as draft Regulation 813, now officially gazetted as Regulation 3630, with effect 30 June 2023.
Mr Dewald van Staden, WISA Process Controllers Division Lead, and registered Professional Process Controller welcomes Regulation 3630, which regulates the professionalisation of Process Controllers. Kindly watch the video or read below, as he shares what this means for the water sector and WISA.
“The Process Controller Division of WISA wishes to acknowledge and thank all of the role players that provided input into this regulation and into formalising the professionalisation of Process Controllers in South Africa. It is a significant step in recognising Class V and Class VI process controllers as the professionals they are and a crucial step in adding a layer of accountability to the day-to-day operation of South Africa’s water and wastewater treatment works.
Under this regulation, operations at all South African Water and Wastewater Treatment Works must be overseen by someone who has the relevant qualifications and experience to ensure compliance with best-practice principles. Even though this is not really something new, the fact that these water sector champions now need to register as Professional Process Controllers is. This registration places upon them the same requirements we expect engineers and natural scientists to adhere to. It must be noted that Water Service Institution will have two years to become compliant with the new regulation, the final date being 30 June 2025.
In terms of the way forward – WISA as the custodian of the Professional Process Controller designation, will register eligible individuals, ensure they maintain their professional status by enhancing their skills, and will provide guidance and support to new entrants into this field in order to ensure the sustainable operation of South Africa’s water services works now and into the future.”
