Non-sewered sanitation standards training – a paradigm shift towards sanitation provision in South Africa

As South Africa faces challenges with failing bulk sanitation infrastructure exacerbated by climate change, population growth, and outdated sanitation methods, it’s evident that traditional flushing toilets are no longer sufficient. Embracing a non-sewered sanitation approach becomes imperative, offering citizens safely managed sanitation services and fostering climate-resilient technologies. This shift not only enhances public health but also maximizes resource potential through circular sanitation practices.

To expedite the adoption of these technologies, stringent quality assurance measures are essential. Standards like ISO 30500:2018 / SANS:2019 provide clear guidelines for design and testing, facilitating market entry for technology developers and aiding implementers in informed decision-making. Additionally, ISO 31800:2020 addresses faecal sludge management, while ISO 24521:2016 / SANS 24521:2020 offers guidance for the management of on-site domestic wastewater services, crucial for communities at any stage of development.

Despite progress, certain communities, particularly rural areas like those in Limpopo, still suffer from inadequate sanitation. This training targets professionals seeking to enhance their technical skills in non-sewered sanitation and faecal sludge treatment within the South African context. Participants will gain insights into relevant norms and standards, alongside practical experience observing sanitation conditions in communities. Join us in driving the paradigm shift towards sustainable sanitation provision in South Africa.
