The course is designed to empower and provoke individuals to take action, based on scientific evidence, best practice and social impacts within their respective fields and organizations; in order to enable and support strategic and systemic sustainable thinking. To change behaviors and create sustainability champions and advocates, who have sufficient information, evidence and knowledge to converse, negotiate and contribute to positive changes within their environs.

It also recommended for all members involved within the water community levels of staff from site operatives to site managers, to construction teams to senior managers, directors, design teams, quantity surveyors, engineers and consultant. Thus, ensuring disciplines have sufficient general awareness and understanding in order to question, converse or perhaps further explore the possibilities and advantages of utilizing sustainable development concepts within their work streams.

This course sets the scene for all the courses to follow under Sustainability and Communication stream of learning and is a required pre-requisite. Commencing with a discussion to critique and differentiate between the often-interchanged terminology of “sustainability” vs “environment” and determining their respective definitions within the context of the science, regulations and the media. It will provide a base level of knowledge and understanding of the following sustainability concepts, which together form the broad themes of sustainability and sustainable development.
